2007 Staten Island Yankees Season Recap
The Yankees finished 47-28, earning the Wild Card spot in the postseason and second place in the McNamara Division. The team’s quest for a third straight NYPL title was ended with a first round sweep at the hands of the Brooklyn Cyclones (for results from the NYPL playoffs, please visit our SI Yanks - Cylones Playoffs Page). Ranked second in the league in both pitching and hitting, the Yankees failed to win the league championship for the first time in five postseason appearances.
Yankees hurlers ranked second in the league in ERA (3.42), shutouts (5) and strikeouts (599). Ryan Pope was the club's most consistent starter, going 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 starts while striking out 46 batters in 43 1/3 innings. Zach McAllister was very effective when he was on, and his 73 strikeouts was good for third in the league.
Staten Island's offense did not blow opponents away, but they got on base and manufactured runs. The Baby Bombers had three players ranked in the top 10 in both on-base percentage and batting average. As a team, they finished second in the league in batting average (.268) and walks (283) while leading the circuit with the fewest strikeouts (497). Infielder Justin Snyder led the league in hits (87), runs scored (68) and on-base percentage (.459). His .335 batting average was tied for fourth in the league circuit and his 40 RBIs were second on the club. Second baseman Damon Sublett displayed a rare combination of power and average: his .326 batting average ranked sixth in the league and his 53 RBI led all New York-Penn League hitters.
