Pernfors Wins Senior Tennis Season Championship |
|
NEW YORK –Mikeal Pernfors won the 1999-2000 SUCCESS Magazine Tour’s season-ending championship today at the LastMinuteTravel.com Masters in Central Park’s Wollman Rink. In the doubles final, Jose-Luis Clerc and Tim Wilkison defeated John Lloyd and Gene Mayer 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
In this afternoon’s final, Pernfors dominated the two nearly identical sets to take his first senior tennis season-end championship and his second tournament title in the 1999-2000 season. Pernfors’ only other title this season was the 1999 Citibank Champions last June in New York where he defeated Mel Purcell, 6-2, 6-4. Leconte, who was defeated in the 1998-99 season-end tournament by Bjorn Borg, won the first game of both sets before Pernfors won five straight to go up 5-1. Leconte rebounded to cut the lead to 5-2, but could not stop Pernfors as he won both sets, 6-2.
“I have changed my views on this city after my US Open experiences and now I really like New York,” said Pernfors, while accepting his championship trophy. “When I woke up this morning I knew I was going to play well today and I definitely can’t play any better than that. It was a perfect day for me.”
“It was a very difficult match and I should have played better,” said Leconte, who lost in his second consecutive season-ending championship. “I was happy to be in the final after the tough matches I had this week, but I think I was also tired from those matches today.”
The LastMinuteTravel.com Masters was the 24th and final event in the 1999-2000 SUCCESS Magazine Tour season. The tournament featured the top eight players in the senior tour’s LastMinuteTravel.com Masters Point Standings.
