More than 1,500 runners paid tribute to NYPD officers who have been killed in the line of duty by participating in the NYPD Memorial 5K Run. The run began at the NYPD Memorial Wall with a prayer at 9:45am and concluded with a free barbeque for all participants.
Finishing in first on the men’s side was Worku Beyi (14:59.11) while Saskia Van Vugt (17:42.27) was the first woman to cross the finish line.
Since 2002, this annual run has benefited Survivors of the Shield. The NYPD Running Club hopes to continually attract participants on a yearly basis so that eventually there will be one runner representing each officer on the Memorial Wall.
