Dominguez Captures First NYC Cycling Championship!
No one could have predicted the exciting ending to the first New York City Cycling Championship. The race, which was held on Sunday, August 4, 2002, exhibited some of the world’s top cyclists such as superstar Lance Armstrong. Although he was the crowd favorite, Lance took a backseat to the thrilling performance of Cuban-American Ivan “The Cuban Missile” Dominguez. Dominguez, a member of Team Saturn, finished the course in a speedy 2:06:38 to beat out the other 32 competitors in the 62.5-mile race.
In the early stages of the race, a group of eight riders seemed to be the only contenders for victory. During the final moments of the race, however, the intensity level increased dramatically as the field caught up and every cyclist was in contention to win. Dominguez saw an opportunity to break away from the group as he rounded the final turn back onto Water Street and sped toward the finish. His victory is truly one that exemplifies the American Dream. In 1998, he defected from Cuba during the Goodwill Games and moved to Miami where he has continued to have a successful cycling career. This extremely exciting victory should set the tone for the annual New York City Cycling Championship.
