Professional and amateur runners from around the world gathered in NYC for the 3rd running of the NYC Half-Marathon Presented by NIKE. The course took runners on a loop of Central Park, through Times Square and down the West Side Highway. The race finished in Battery Park, treating runners to a spectacular view of the Statue of Liberty upon completion of their 13.1-mile tour of Manhattan. Tadesse Tola (1:00:58) defeated Patrick Makau by a mere one second in a thrilling finish on the men’s side, while Catherine Ndereba won her second NYC Half Marathon with a time of 1:10:18.
Tola and Kenya’s Patrick Makau raced evenly throughout the course, but it was Tola who was finally able to pull away in the closing feet. In the women’s race, Ndereba edged Madai Perez of Mexico by eight seconds.
The sold-out field of 10,000 featured runners from across the country and around the globe and served as the final competition for some of the top marathon runners before the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. More than 19,000 people applied for a spot in the race, which contained both a pro and recreational division. The field of recreational runners is selected at random through a lottery.
