Imagine the Olympic Games in New York City. In 2012, it may become a reality. And you can help make it happen.
On November 2nd 2001, New York was named the U.S. Applicant City to compete for the 2012 Olympic Games by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). Now it faces a challenging international competition against some of the world’s other great cities leading to the IOC decision on July 6, 2005.
Other cities vying for the 2012 Games include Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, London, Madrid, Moscow, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.
The United States has hosted the Olympic Games four times (1904: St Louis; 1932, 1984: Los Angeles; 1996: Atlanta) and the Olympic Winter Games four times (1932, 1980: Lake Placid; 1960: Squaw Valley; 2002: Salt Lake).
Hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 would celebrate the renewal of New York’s promise – and propel the city to even greater heights.
MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG’S STATEMENT REGARDING NEW YORK CITY'S OLYMPIC BID
“It gives me great pleasure to see NYC2012 striving to give New York City its first Olympic Games. For years, New Yorkers have embodied the Olympic spirit – where scores of people from all around the world come to compete, celebrate and make their dreams come true.”
‘New York City faces intense competition from some of the world’s greatest cities for the honor of hosting the 2012 Games. But we’re up for the challenge. We will continue to help promote the bid in every way – leading up to the final vote on July 6, 2005.”
“I would like to thank everyone who is working on New York City’s bid – led by Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff, the Founder of the Bid, NYC2012 Executive Director Jay Kriegel and the staff.”
