Results from the 2004 BMC Software New York City Cycling Championship
On August 1st, the third annual BMC Software New York City Cycling Championship was held in Lower Manhattan’s financial district. Nearly 150 professional male and female cyclists, a flock of bike messengers, as well as a number of junior and elite amateurs raced along the 1.2-mile circuit whose start/finish was at the intersection of Wall and Water Streets. The course, already challenging because of the tight turns, was made even more difficult due to Sunday’s rain. Nevertheless, it remained spectator-friendly, as an estimated 100,000 spectators were out to watch the race. The day began early at 7:30 a.m. with the Junior PCT Grand Prix and ran until 3:00 p.m., concluding with the men’s Pro Race and an exciting win for Greg Henderson of New Zealand.
In the BMC Software New York City Cycling Championship women’s race, Mari Holden achieved victory after traveling 22.5 miles along the same course in a time of 54:21. She tried to separate herself from the group early in the race, but was not successful in pulling away until mile 17. Sarah Uhl, winner of the 2002 women’s race, tried to keep up with Holden, but couldn’t “hold on” as she finished sixth. Gina Grain took second place and is now ranked number one in the Pro Cycling Tour point standings. These women braved the constant downpours on a tricky course with eight turns and cobble-stoned sections to give the New York crowd an exciting race.
Although the day began with clouds and rain, just moments before the start of the men’s Pro Race, the sky cleared. Greg Henderson of New Zealand won the men’s Pro Race, the fourth leg on the five-city Professional Cycling Tour. Henderson’s exciting finish won him the top prize in the $40,000 purse. After overcoming an early crash, Henderson passed 15 cyclists in the last 200 yards to win the 62.5-mile (100 km) race in a time of 2:05:13; his average speed was 26.9 miles per hour. The Pro Race consisted of 18 teams and racers of 10 different nationalities. Marty Nothstein, last year’s winner and a gold medallist in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, finished 19th after a spill 20 miles into the race. Fortunately, the fall did not jeopardize his trip to Athens later this month. Fred Rodriguez, the National Road Cycling Champion, placed 8th; Gordon Fraser of Canada took 2nd, while Ivan Domingues of Cuba took 3rd.
