NFL Draft Picks
N.Y. Giants
The New York Giants had only four picks in 2005 NFL Draft due to the acquisition of Eli Manning in 2004 in which they surrendered this year’s first and fifth round picks. With a number of holes to fill, they managed to get value on every single selection while filling those holes. The team needed help at the cornerback, defensive end, and running back positions, and was able to select players at those positions with their first three picks. They drafted LSU cornerback Corey Webster with the 11th pick in Round Two--a player who might've been a Top 20 pick if not for an injury-plagued senior season. In the third round, they drafted defensive end Justin Tuck, who was Notre Dame's all-time sack leader and will provide much needed depth at the position behind Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora. In Round Four, the Giants selected 6-3, 267-pound Southern Illinois running back Brandon Jacobs. With Tiki Barber now 30-years-old, and the Giants 13-for-27 record on third-and-one plays last year—a 48.1 percent conversion rate that's the NFL's second-worst—Jacobs could be their short-yardage back as well as Barber's understudy. In the sixth round, they selected Florida State defensive end Eric Moore, a quick pass-rusher who totaled 14.5 sacks in his career with the Seminoles.

N.Y. Jets
On Thursday, April 21st, the New York Jets acquired tight end Doug Jolley from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for their first-round draft choice (26th overall). In addition to Jolley, the Raiders sent the second-round selection (47th overall) they received from the Houston Texans as well as two more selections from the sixth round (182nd from Arizona and 185th from Dallas).
On Saturday, April 23rd, the Jets got the opportunity to use those selections from the Raiders. With the15th pick in the second round (47th overall), the Jets selected Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent, an All-American two of the last three seasons at Ohio State during which time he converted an impressive 87.8 percent (65-of-74) of his field goal attempts. In 2004, he became the first kicker to be named Team MVP and won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s best kicker after converting 20-of-23 field goals and recording 34 touchbacks on 55 kickoffs during the regular season. Ten selections later, the Jets tabbed Clemson cornerback Justin Miller with the 57th selection overall. While Miller is viewed as a raw talent as a corner, his value to the Jets will be on kick-off and punt returns. His 30.7-yard career average on kickoff returns and five touchdowns are school records and his average is fourth best in NCAA history. In the third round, the Jets selected 26-year-old defensive tackle Sione Pouha who will help bolster the defensive line after the offseason departure of nose tackle Jason Ferguson. The Jets added depth to their secondary with the selections of free safety Kerry Rhodes from Louisville in the fourth round and strong safety Andre Maddox from North Carolina State in the fifth round. In the sixth round, they selected running back Cedric Houston from the University of Tennessee while they continued to add depth to their offense in the sixth and seventh rounds with the selections of tight end Joel Dreessen from Colorado State and speedy wide receiver Harry Williams from Tuskegee.

Giants Get Their Man(ning)
After weeks of speculation, the New York Giants finally were able to acquire their quarterback of the future in University of Mississippi standout Eli Manning. Manning, son of Hall-of-Fame quarterback Archie Manning, was touted as the highest-rated player available in the 2004 NFL Draft. With the San Diego Chargers holding the first-overall selection, the New York Giants had to find a way to trade for their guy. After watching San Diego select Manning at number one, the Giants realized that a deal could still be consummated by selecting the quarterback that San Diego believed was just as talented, North Carolina State’s Philip Rivers. Nearly an hour and fifteen minutes after selecting Manning, the San Diego Chargers agreed to trade him to the Giants in exchange for Rivers and a number of picks. The Giants, along with Rivers, included their third-round pick this year and first- and fifth-round picks next year to ensure that Manning was theirs. While some believed that this ransom was too high for any one player, Manning’s college achievements certainly support the philosophy. A holder of 45 different game, season and career records at Mississippi, Manning completed 829 of 1,363 passes for 10,119 yards, 81 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. Manning’s numbers at Ole Miss rivaled that of his brother’s when he was at Tennessee and later became the first overall selection in the 1999 NFL Draft—Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. The New York Giants have not selected a quarterback in the first round since Phil Simms (1979). It will be interesting to see if Eli can have similar success as his predecessor.

Jets Add Speed to Defense with Vilma
With their top choices at cornerback already off the board, the Jets feel the selection of University of Miami linebacker Jonathan Vilma will be match made in heaven. Vilma, considered by many as the best linebacker prospect in the draft, certainly fills a hole in a linebacker corps that lost veterans Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones; both were released. Despite a small stature for an NFL prototypical linebacker (6-1, 230 lbs.), Vilma led the Miami Hurricanes in tackles over the last three seasons and graduated with a degree in Finance after carrying a 3.5 GPA. Also worthy of note, Vilma is only a few pounds lighter than another standout linebacker from Miami was when he left for the NFL—Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

NFL Draft Notes
N.Y. Giants – William Joseph, DT, University of Miami
With the 25th Pick in the 2003 NFL Draft the Giants added depth to their defensive line by selecting William Joseph from the University of Miami. Joseph is a 6-5, 308 pound defensive tackle. He was a first-team All-Big East Conference selection in 2002. He started all 47 games in which he played in his career and recorded 199 total tackles, 87 of which were solo tackles, 19.5 sacks and 46 stops for losses. He will not be expected to start in his rookie year because of the Giants depth at the defensive tackle position with veterans Cornelius Griffin and Keith Hamilton. Joseph will certainly add depth to a team that ranked fifth in the NFC in total defense. Look for Joseph to play a valuable role as a reserve in his rookie season.
N.Y. Jets – Dewayne Robertson, DT, University of Kentucky
Originally, the Jets had two first rounds picks (13th and 22nd), but on Friday they traded both picks, as well as their fourth round selection, to the Chicago Bears to move up to the fourth overall pick. The reason for this trade was that they had targeted highly coveted defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson from the University of Kentucky. On draft day their plan paid off as they selected Robertson with the fourth overall pick. Robertson is a very quick and powerful player with good size. He was named second-team All-Southeastern Conference for the 2002 season, a season in which he recorded 48 tackles and five sacks. Many critics have compared Robertson to Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp. Whatever the case may be, look for Robertson to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

NFL Draft Notes
Let’s see how the local teams fared with their first round picks during the National Football League’s Draft on April 20th.
New York Giants – Jeremy Shockey, TE, University of Miami
Despite possessing the 15th pick in the draft, the Giants wanted to make sure they got the man they greatly coveted. As a result, they traded away a fourth-round pick to the Tennessee Titans to move up one spot and select University of Miami Tight End Jeremy Shockey. The Giants have not had a weapon at the Tight End position since Mark Bavaro. Shockey was the Miami Hurricanes top receiving option and an outstanding red-zone threat throughout his college career. At 6-5, 250 pounds, Shockey will be the big target with enough speed to spread out the Giants’ offense.
New York Jets – Bryan Thomas, DE, University of Alabama-Birmingham
With the 22nd pick overall, the Jets decided to add depth to their defensive line. Thomas was a four-year starter at UAB and is tremendously strong (6-4, 266 pounds). He will join a defensive line consisting of John Abraham, Shuan Ellis, and Jason Ferguson. His attitude fits perfectly into the Herman Edwards-style defense. Despite holes in their secondary, the Jets feel Thomas was the type of player they could not pass on.
