2006 NFL Draft Recap

North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams was selected by the Houston Texans as the No.1 pick of the 2006 NFL Draft. University of Southern California tailback Reggie Bush, the 2006 Heisman winner, was chosen by the New Orleans Saints at No. 2 and the Tennessee Titans selected Texas quarterback Vince Young with the third selection. Matt Leinart, Bush's USC teammate and a fellow Heisman Trophy winner, went to the Arizona Cardinals with the 10th pick.

N.Y. Giants

After trading down seven spots in the first round (acquiring two additional picks in the process), the Giants selected Boston College defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka with the final selection in the first round. Kiwanuka was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 when he totaled 67 tackles, 25.5 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks, and two interceptions. A sprained knee limited him in 2005, but he still finished the season with 51 tackles, 16.5 tackles for a loss, and 9.5 sacks. After moving down in the first round, the Giants traded up in the second round to select speedy wide receiver Sinorice Moss from the University of Miami (Fla.). Moss finished the 2005 season with 37 catches for 614 yards and six touchdowns and should complement Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress as a game-breaking third receiver with blazing speed. In the third and fourth rounds, the Giants addressed their lack of depth on defense by selecting Georgia Tech linebacker Gerris Wilkinson and Northwestern defensive tackle Barry Cofield. In the fifth round, Big Blue selected East Carolina offensive tackle Guy Wimper--an athletic player who was used at linebacker, defensive end, and tight end in college. In the draft’s last two rounds they added depth to their defensive secondary by adding University of Alabama safety/corner Charlie Peprah and University of Maryland cornerback Gerrick McPhearson.

N.Y. Jets

The Jets used their two first-round selections to bolster their offensive line with the selections of University of Virginia offensive tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson with the 4th pick and Ohio State center Nick Mangold with the 29th pick. In the second round, the Jets first traded down from #35 to #53 overall and then traded back up to #49 to select Oregon quarterback Kellen Clemens, who will provide the Jets with much needed depth at the position if Chad Pennington is unable to recover from his shoulder injury. With their two picks in the third round, the Jets addressed their defensive depth by selecting linebacker Anthony Schlegel from Ohio State and strong safety Eric Smith from Michigan State. The Gang Green went back to offense in round 4, as they drafted wide receiver Brad Smith from Missouri at #103 overall and then running back Leon Washington at #117 overall. In the 5th round the Gang Green selected TE Jason Pociask from Wisconsin. Then, in the 6th round they drafted another defensive player, CB Drew Coleman from Texas Christian. Finally, in the 7th round the Jets chose DT Titus Adams from Nebraska.
