2008 NFL Draft Recap
Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the top overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. For the second consecutive year, St. Louis chose a defensive lineman in the first round with the selection of Virginia’s Chris Long at #2. Atlanta chose Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan at #3, followed by Arkansas running back Darren McFadden to Oakland at #4 and LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey to Kansas City at #5. NFL decision-makers maneuvered more than ever, making a record 33 trades on Saturday and Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 28 from the 2004 draft. The Giants boosted their secondary with their first two picks of the draft by selecting Miami safety Kenny Phillips and USC cornerback Terrell Thomas in the second round. The Jets selected Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston in the first round and traded back into the first round to selected Purdue tight end Dustin Keller with the 30th pick.
N.Y. Giants
The Giants came away from the 2008 NFL Draft filling many of their needs. The Giants drafted Miami (Fla.) safety Kenny Phillips in the first round (#31) to replace departed safety Gibril Wilson and added secondary depth with USC cornerback Terrell Thomas in the second round (#63). The Giants selected Michigan WR Mario Manningham, considered by many as a first-round talent, in the third round (#95). The final picks included OLB Bryan Kehl from BYU, ILB Jonathan Goff from Vanderbilt, QB Andre’ Woodson from Kentucky, and DE Robert Henderson from Southern Mississippi.
