College basketball’s top prospects gathered in New York City with the hopes of becoming the top selection in the 2008 NBA Draft. With the #1 overall pick, the Chicago Bulls selected Derrick Rose, a 6-3 point guard from the University of Memphis. The New York Knicks held the sixth overall pick and selected 6-9 small forward Danilo Gallinari who played last year for Armani Jeans Milan in the Italian League.
The 19-year-old Rose is expected to start immediately for Chicago, a young team that many experts predict will make the playoffs in a weak Eastern conference. After Chicago, Miami picked second and selected power forward Michael Beasley of Kansas State. O.J. Mayo went third overall to Minnesota, but was later traded to Memphis in a deal that sent the fifth overall pick, Kevin Love, up north.
Gallinari, a 19-year-old small forward, is expected to add sharp-shooting ability and ball-handling skills to the Knicks, who will be led by new coach Mike D’Antoni. Gallinari was the Knicks’ only pick of the draft.
