Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Title Boxing Match:
Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr.

When: Saturday, November 8, 2008
Where: Madison Square Garden

Light-Heavyweight champion Joe “The Pride of Wales” Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s) successfully defended his title against former world champion Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KO’s) in a unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden. Calzaghe, the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization Light-Heavyweight champion, is three title defenses shy of breaking Joe Louis’ record of 25 career title fights and three victories short of Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0.

With 40 seconds remaining in the first round, Jones surprised Calzaghe with a sharp right jab that knocked him to the canvas. Calzaghe quickly regrouped and dominated the remaining 11 rounds of the match. Calzaghe landed 344 of 985 punches thrown, which was the most ever allowed by Jones Jr. Conversely, Jones Jr. landed only 159 of 475 punches thrown. At the conclusion of the 12-round match, all three judges scored the fight 118-109 in favor of Calzaghe.

The fight was originally scheduled for September 20, however Calzaghe suffered an injury to his right hand during training. The fight was rescheduled for November 8.
