Light-Heavyweight Boxing Match:
Roy Jones Jr. vs. Felix Trinidad

When: January 19, 2007
Where: Theater at Madison Square Garden

Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad went toe-to-toe in a much-anticipated bout between two former boxing world champions. Jones Jr., taking advantage of his speed and strength, scored two knockdowns en route to a clear unanimous decision the 12 round, light-heavyweight fight.

Trinidad looked impressive early as he won three out of the first five rounds, but in the end Jones was too much for Trinidad as he knocked him down in the seventh and tenth rounds. Jones was the clear cut winner in this bout, but in the minds of most fans, this bout took place well past both fighters’ prime. The loss likely marks the end of Trinidad’s professional career, while the victory for Jones could put him in contention for another shot at a world title.

Trinidad and Roy Jones Jr. both had a lot to prove as they stepped in the ring. Felix Trinidad, coming off a 32 month layoff, was set to prove critics wrong after a disappointing showing against Ronald “Winky” Wright in his last fight. Roy Jones Jr. also had many critics challenging his skills after a three bout losing streak that knocked him from the pantheon of boxing champions.
