On the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, a sell-out crowd of 5,038 were in attendance at the Theater at Madison Square Garden to witness an impressive exhibition by one of the most promising young middleweights in professional boxing: Ireland’s-own John Duddy. The evening attracted some notable attendees, including actor Liam Neeson and ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, who were on-hand to catch a glimpse of the undefeated Duddy (16-0, 14KO’s) in his fight with Shelby Pudwill (21-3-1, 9 KO’s).
Duddy displayed sensational punching power and poise in defeating Pudwill, the fighter touted as the biggest challenge of his young career. After having knocked Pudwill down twice in the first two rounds, Duddy capped his performance with a looping right hand that left Pudwill on the canvas for the last time. The fight, which was scheduled for 10 rounds, was called at 1:51 seconds of the third round.
In the undercard bouts, middleweight James Moore (4-0, 3 KO’s) defeated Jose Felix (9-3-2, 3 KO’s) and unbeaten super middleweight Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin (3-0, 3 KO’s) knocked-out Willie Cruz (3-6, 2 KO’s) in the second round. In the women’s fight, undefeated ‘Bronx Bombshell’ Maureen Shea (5-0, 2 KO’s) provided a nice birthday gift for her 65 year-old father with an impressive unanimous decision win (40-36) over opponent LeAnne Villarreal (1-5-1, 1 KO).
