Zab Judah vs. Carlos Baldomir
Jean-Marc Mormeck vs. O’Neil Bell

When: Saturday, January 7, 2006
Where: Madison Square Garden

The featured bout, intended to be a tune-up fight for undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah (34-3-1, 25 KOs), turned out to be a stunning defeat and crippling loss for Brooklyn’s own ‘Super’ Judah. Argentina’s Carlos Baldomir (42-9-6, 12 KOs) defied the odds while proving more patient than the champ, who may have fallen victim to underestimating the talents of his underdog opponent.

A crowd of more than 4,300 packed in to see the hometown favorite Judah, however, the chants of ‘Super Judah’ from the audience were not enough propel Judah to victory. The champ was out-boxed by a well prepared and feisty Baldomir, who claimed the victory by unanimous decision (115-113, 114-113 and 115-112). With the victory, Baldomir claimed the WBC title strap; however, the WBA and IBF titles were not on the line for the contest and now sit vacant.

In the second title fight of the evening, O’Neil Bell (26-1-1) unified the Cruiserweight titles by virtue of a convincing tenth-round KO of Frenchman Jean-Marc Mormeck (31-3, 21 KOs). Both fighters exhibited power and precision, staggering their opponent at different times during the early rounds. But it was Bell who delivered the deciding blows in the tenth round with a furious combination of right hands followed by a sharp left uppercut, which left Mormeck on the canvas. With the victory, Bell continues his dominance over the cruiserweight division having not lost a bout since April, 1998.

Tickets were available at the Garden box office or by calling Ticketmaster (212-307-7171).
