John “The Quietman” Ruiz vs. James “Lights Out” Toney

When: Saturday, April 30, 2005
Where: Madison Square Garden

James Toney captured the World Boxing Association heavyweight title by winning a unanimous 12-round decision over John Ruiz at Madison Square Garden. Toney joined Bob Fitzsimmons (1897) and Roy Jones Jr. (2003) as former middleweight champs to become heavyweight title holders--the second to do it against Ruiz, who lost his belt the first time to Jones. Judges gave Toney the decision by scores of 116-111, 116-111 and 115-112. Toney improved to 69-4 with two draws while Ruiz, 33, fell to 41-6 with one draw. Toney took his first world title in 1991 and became a cruiserweight champion in 2003 before moving into the heavyweight ranks later that year and defeating Evander Holyfield.

Tickets were available at the Garden box office or by calling Ticketmaster (212-307-7171).
