| Where: |
Madison Square Garden |
Championship boxing returned to Madison Square Garden as Felix “Tito” Trinidad (41-1 with 34 knockouts) dusted himself off after 29 months in retirement to defeat Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (27-4-1 with 23 knockouts) with an eighth-round TKO to capture the WBA International Middleweight Championship.
The 17,406 in attendance, which consisted of a large Trinidad fan contingency, were treated to the sort of old-fashioned, middleweight slugfest that many had envisioned. However, it was Trinidad (42-1, 35 KOs) who survived a third-round knockdown and withstood the wild swinging ways of the former welterweight champ to emerge victorious.
Trinidad scored his first knock down with a left hook to the body of Mayorga--crumpling him in a neutral corner. A few seconds later, Trinidad knocked him down again with a devastating right—a punch that clearly hurt him. Mayorga staggered to his feet as Trinidad moved in to finish him, and unleashed another barrage that finished with a blow to the top of the head. After falling to the canvas for the third time, referee Steve Smoger ended the bout by awarding Trinidad with a TKO at 2:39 in the eighth round as his fans in the Garden cheered.
