New York Mets 2007 Draft
The New York Mets went for some big arms with their first three picks in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. With the 42nd overall pick, the Mets selected 6-foot-5, 250-pound Oregon St. reliever Eddie Kunz. Kunz throws a heavy 93-94 mph fastball similar to that of Mike Pelfrey, and scouts believe he will most likely develop into a setup man, a role he played for the Beavers’ 2006 NCAA Championship team. That season Kunz went 5-1 and had a 3.61 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings. The Mets’ second pick (47th overall) was used to select 6-foot-3, 200-pound high school pitcher Nate Vineyard, who has a good three-pitch mix with his slider serving as an out-pitch . Vineyard was 8-2 with a 0.84 ERA and had 105 strikeouts in 59 innings for Woodland High School (GA) this year. Another high school pitcher, 6-foot-10, 250-pound Scott Moviel, was taken with the Mets’ third pick (77th overall). Moviel, who throws a 88-91 mph fastball and an improved curveball, has two older brothers already pitching in the pros, Greg with the Mariners and Paul with the White Sox.
