New York Mets 2008 Draft
With their first pick (18th overall) in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the New York Mets selected first basemen Issac “Ike” Davis from Arizona State University. Davis, 21, hit .394 with 16 homers in 49 games for the Sun Devils in 2008. Davis is projected as a slugging first-basemen or corner outfielder. The Mets received the 18th pick as compensation for losing Tom Glavine to the Atlanta Braves through free agency. The Mets’ second pick (22nd overall) was David “Reese” Havens, a 21-year old shortstop out of the University of South Carolina who can potentially convert into a catcher or 2nd basemen for the Mets in the future. He batted .359 with 18 homers in 63 games as a junior for the Gamecocks in 2008. With the 33rd pick, the Mets selected UNC Wilmington right-handed pitcher Bradley Holt. Holt finished the season with an 11-1 record and a 3.18 era for the Seahawks, striking out 95 batters in 93 1/3 innings. This was the first time since 2005 that the Mets had a 1st round pick.
