Major League Baseball All-Star Game

What: Major League Baseball All-Star Game
When: July 15, 2008
Where: Yankee Stadium

Baseball’s biggest stars were on display at the 2008 Major League All-Star Game held at Yankee Stadium. The game pitted the best players from the American League against the best players from the National League, as they battled it out for the right for their respective league to receive home field advantage in the upcoming World Series. After a 15-inning marathon that ran just short of five hours, the American League came out on top by a score of 4-3.

The National League got off to a 2-0 lead on the strength of a fifth-inning home run by Colorado’s Matt Holliday and a sacrifice fly by Houston’s Lance Berkman in the sixth. Boston’s J.D. Drew tied up the game with a two run shot in the seventh, and the teams traded scores in the eighth before entering extra innings. It was not until the 15th inning when Michael Young of the Texas Rangers hit a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in the Twins’ Justin Morneau for the game-winning run. Drew earned MVP honors for the game, with his crucial two-run blast that put the American League on the scoreboard.

Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir earned the win for the American League, pitching one scoreless inning. Houston’s Brad Lidge was credited for the loss, after Young hit a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded and only one out. At the time Morneau crossed the plate, both teams had already run out of pitchers to use in the bullpen.

The American League is 10-0-1 in the last 11 MLB All-Star games and is now 6-0 since the All-Star Game began deciding home field advantage in the World Series.

The State Farm Home Run Derby also proved to be one for the ages. Morneau took the title by besting Texas’ Josh Hamilton 5-3 in the final round, but it was Hamilton who stole the show. Hamilton dazzled the Yankee Stadium crowd by blasting 28 home runs in the first round of the derby, eclipsing the previous first round record of 24 and making his mark on history.

On July 13, the XM All-Star Futures Game featured the game’s best minor league players while the Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball also took place at the stadium that day. Gatorade All-Star Workout Day on July 14 showcased the All-Stars taking batting practice as well as the State Farm Home Run Derby.

All-Star Week featured several other events in the Big Apple including the DHL All-Star Fan Fest, which will run from July 11-15. Visitors at Fan Fest were able to experience more than 40 baseball-themed attractions including autograph sessions, virtual batting cages and a large exhibit of baseball memorabilia.
