On August 26th, the New York / New Jersey MetroStars defeated the Dallas Burn to clinch the team's first Eastern Division Title in their short history. The MetroStars won the game by the score of 6-4 behind the heroics of midfielder Clint Mathis. Mathis set a Major League Soccer record with five goals and ten points in a game. This spectacular evening came just days after Mathis was named MLS Player of the Week. On a night full of records, forward Adolfo Valencia scored his 15th goal of the season, setting the MetroStars' record for goals in a season. Giovanni Savarese held the previous record of 14 ('97-98). Of course, this was also a record night for the team, as the club record for wins (16) was set. By clinching the Eastern Division Title, the MetroStars earned a playoff berth for the third time in team history. |
