Red Bull New York Notes
Claudio Reyna signs with Red Bulls
January 23, 2007   Claudio Reyna, one of the greatest soccer players this country has ever produced, will be returning to his homeland to play the final years of his illustrious career for the New York Red Bulls. Reyna was released from his current deal with English Premier League’s Manchester City and plans to start right away as the Red Bulls’ captain and center midfielder. Reyna will be reunited with Bruce Arena, the coach of the Red Bulls, who previously coached Reyna for Team USA in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. Despite being 33 years old, Reyna will surely help fill a void in the Red Bulls’ midfield and provide much-needed experience and leadership.

Red Bulls Trade Guevara to Chivas USA
November 27, 2006  The New York Red Bulls traded former MLS MVP Amado Guevara to Chivas USA for a third-round draft pick and a “designated player” slot, which now can be used to land an international star such England’s David Beckham or Brazilian legend Ronaldo. This new “designated player” slot allows MLS teams to acquire players outside of the $2 million-per-team salary cap and was created to attract high-profile stars such as Beckham to the United States. After joining the then-MetroStars in 2003 from Honduran club CD Motagua, Guevara earned MLS MVP honors in 2004 and was named the Red Bulls team MVP in 2006 after scoring eight goals and dishing out five assists.

Red Bulls Hire Bruce Arena
On July 18th, the New York Red Bulls hired former U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena to replace interim coach Richie Williams. Williams was elevated to the top spot when head coach Mo Johnston was fired on June 27th. Arena has won over twice as many games as any other U.S. coach and led the team to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup--the team's best showing. Although the U.S. failed to advance to the second round in Germany this summer after losses to the Czech Republic and Ghana and a draw with eventual champion Italy, Arena steps down from his post with a record of 71-30-29 in 130 games with the national team. Arena’s other accomplishments include five won or shared NCAA titles as coach of Virginia and two MLS championships and a CONCACAF Champions Cup with D.C. United.

Red Bulls Trade for Buddle
In a trade with the Columbus Crew, Edson Buddle comes to the Red Bulls in exchange for attacking midfielder Eddie Gaven and the rights to defender Chris Leitch. Buddle, who has scored 42 goals in 106 games with the Crew, will likely start at forward with Youri Djorkaeff in the Red Bull’s starting lineup. Buddle, who totaled nine goals and two assists for the Crew last season, gives the Red Bulls the striker they have lacked since trading Ante Razov to Chivas USA earlier in the off-season.

Red Bull Purchases MetroStars – Team now called New York Red Bulls
March 9, 2006   Red Bull Company Ltd. has purchased the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. The revamped organization will take the field under the name New York Red Bulls for the 2006 season. The team will be closely affiliated with its new sister organization, Red Bull Salzburg, last year’s champion of the Austrian Bundesliga soccer league. The Red Bulls and their new line-up, which includes the first-overall selection in this year’s draft Marvell Wynne, make their home debut at Giants Stadium on April 8th vs. the New England Revolution.
