MetroStars Fall to Chicago

Semi Finals - Game 3 - On Friday, October 6th, the MetroStars were defeated 3-2 by the Chicago Fire in the decisive game of the best-of-three series. The Fire took an early lead in the game off of goals by defender C.J. Brown and forward Hristo Stoitchkov. The MetroStars responded quickly as Adolfo Valencia scored two goals within five minutes of the Fire's attack. In the 88th minute of the game, Ante Razov scored off a pass from teammate Chris Armas to send the Chicago Fire back to the MLS Cup Final for the second straight year. After a remarkable year that saw the New York/New Jersey MetroStars make their climb from worst to first, we wish the club continued success in the 2001 MLS season.

MetroStars Force a Game Three Against Chicago

Semi Finals - Game 2 - On Saturday Sept. 30th, the NY/NJ MetroStars defeated the Chicago Fire by a score of 2-0 to even the series at 1-1. The MetroStars goals were scored by Mark Chung and Adolfo Valencia. Chicago was unable to get on the scoreboard as a result of goalkeeper and Captain Mike Ammann's return to the lineup after suffering an injury near the end of the regular season. The teams will play a decisive game three on Friday, October 6th in Chicago. The winner of the game will play in the MLS Cup final on October 15th in Washington D.C. against either Kansas City or Los Angeles.

MetroStars Fall to Chicago in Game One of Semifinals, 3-0

Semi Finals - Game 1 - Led by former MetroStars' goalkeeper, Zach Thornton, the Chicago Fire defeated the MetroStars in Soldier Field on Tuesday night, September 26th. The three Fire goals were scored by Hristo Stoitchov, Dema Kovalenko, and Ante Razov to put the game out of reach. The Metros were unable to capitalize on any of their scoring chances as they showed glimpses of offense throughout the game. Thornton, however, proved to be on the top of his game as he recorded eight saves against his former club. The MetroStars look to even the series on Saturday night where the first MLS semifinal game will be played in Giants Stadium. The winner of the series will advance to the MLS Cup final at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, October 15th.

Round 1 - Game 2 - On Wednesday, September 20th, the MetroStars defeated the Dallas Burn in Game Two of the quarterfinals by a score of 2-1. Both MetroStars goals were scored by midfielder Clint Mathis, who has now scored nine goals in four games against the Burn this season. All of the scoring took place in the second half, while Dallas' only goal was scored on a penalty kick. MetroStars will now advance to the semifinals and await the winner of the Chicago Fire-New England Revolution series, which is tied at one game apiece. That series will conclude on Friday September 22nd in Chicago. If the Fire wins the series, then Chicago will host the MetroStars on Tuesday, September 26th for Game One. If the Revolution win the series, then New York/New Jersey will have home field advantage in the semifinals.

This is the MetroStars third appearance in the playoffs in five years. MLS Cup 2000 will take place on Sunday, October 15, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

MLS Cup Playoff Series Format (Quarterfinals and Semifinals)

· MLS Quarterfinals and Semifinal series will consist of a maximum of three games, two of which the higher seeded team would host. (if a third game is necessary)

· Over the course of the series teams will accumulate points as they do in the regular season. (win = 3 pts., tie = 1 pt., loss = 0 pts.).

· The standard 10-minute sudden-death overtime will be played following each game in the event the score is tied.

· The winner of the series will be the first team to reach or exceed five points within the three games. (i.e. two wins - 6 pts., or a win and two ties - 5 pts.) - only the first two games can end as draws

· Should the series remain even on points following regulation or overtime of the third game (3-3, or 4-4) the two clubs will move directly to an additional 20-minute golden-goal overtime period (two 10-min. halves). If neither team scores during the 20-minute period, the game will be decided on penalty kicks according to FIFA regulations.

Team Clinches Eastern Division Title on Record Setting Night

On August 26th, the New York / New Jersey MetroStars defeated the Dallas Burn to clinch the team's first Eastern Division Title in their short history. The MetroStars won the game by the score of 6-4 behind the heroics of midfielder Clint Mathis. Mathis set a Major League Soccer record with five goals and ten points in a game. This spectacular evening came just days after Mathis was named MLS Player of the Week.

On a night full of records, forward Adolfo Valencia scored his 15th goal of the season, setting the MetroStars' record for goals in a season. Giovanni Savarese held the previous record of 14 ('97-98). Of course, this was also a record night for the team, as the club record for wins (16) was set. By clinching the Eastern Division Title, the MetroStars earned a playoff berth for the third time in team history.
