Nearly 500 athletes from New York City’s public, private, and parochial schools competed in this year’s New York City Mayor’s Cup All-Scholastic Tennis Championships. The tournament featured both a team draw and an individual draw with varsity and middle school divisions. The Mayor’s Cup tournament has become the second largest event to be held at the USTA National Tennis Center--home of the US Open. Horace Mann High School came away victorious in the final of the Boys’ Varsity Team competition, beating Benjamin Cardozo High School 3-2. In the final of the Girls’ Varsity Team bracket, St. Francis Prep defeated Midwood High School 3-0.
In the individual competition, Curtis Roby (Trinity School, Manhattan) won the Boy’s Varsity Singles crown with a victory (7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3) over Coleman Crutchfield (Riverdale Country School, Bronx). Shinann Featherston (St. Francis Prep, Queens) defeated Jillian Santos (Benjamin Cardozo High School, Queens) 6-3, 6-0 to win the Girls’ Varsity Singles title. The team of Cohen/Wei-Cheng Lin (Benjamin Cardozo High School, Queens) defeated the team of Malaric/Segan (Hunter College High School, Manhattan) 6-4, 6-4 to win the Boy’s Varsity Double’s title. The team of King/King (Midwood High School, Brooklyn) beat Passik/Smith (Benjamin Cardozo High School, Queens) 6-0, 6-0 to win the Girl’s Varsity Doubles title.
In the Boy’s Middle School Singles, Andrew Adams (Santa Maria R.C) defeated Andrew Arnaboldi (Horace Mann School, Bronx) 6-0, 6-0. Gabrielle Sullivan (MS 51) beat Becky Shtilkind to win the Girls’ Middle School Singles. In doubles action, the team of Malkani/Zeliger (Horace Mann School, Bronx) defeated Antonoff/Moscona-Skolnik (Horace Mann School, Bronx) 6-3, 6-3 to win the Boy’s Middle School Doubles division. The team of Aisiks/Meltzer defeated the team of Applebaum/Fishbein 6-2, 6-1 to win the Girl’s Middle School Doubles division.
