The New York City Sports Commission -- in partnership with CityLax, the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) and Randall's Island Sports Foundation -- hosted the Mayor's Cup High School Lacrosse Jamboree at Randall's Island. The Jamboree offered boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs from New York City’s public, private, and parochial high schools an opportunity to test their skills against the top talent in the five boroughs.
The top boys’ teams from the Mayor’s Cup Jamboree were Christopher Columbus HS (5-0-0), Frederick Douglass Academy (4-0-1), and Monsignor Farrell HS (4-0-1), while the top girls’ teams were Beach Channel HS (5-0-0), Frederick Douglass Academy (4-0-1), Fieldston School (5-0-0), and Curtis HS (4-0-1). The growth of lacrosse in New York City’s public schools has been tremendous as several PSAL teams finished near or at the top of the standings.
The 2008 Mayor's Cup Lacrosse Jamboree featured 34 teams including defending PSAL Lacrosse Champions Midwood HS (boys) and Tottenville HS (girls). Other schools who competed included: A.P. Randolph HS (boys & girls), Beach Channel HS (girls), Benjamin Cardozo HS (boys & girls), Brearley School (girls) Christopher Columbus HS (boys), Collegiate HS (boys), Curtis HS (boys & girls), Fieldston School (girls), Frederick Douglass Academy (boys & girls), Herbert Lehman HS (boys), Horace Mann School (boys & girls), Marymount (girls), Midwood HS (boys & girls), Monsignor Farrell HS (boys), Mount St. Michael Academy (boys), New Dorp HS (boys), Nightingale-Bamford School (girls), Port Richmond HS (boys), Queens HS of Teaching (girls), Sacred Heart HS (girls), Sports Professions HS (boys), Staten Island Academy (girls), Stuyvesant HS (boys), Tottenville HS (girls), Trinity School (boys) and Xaverian HS (boys).
In the last ten years, the number of U.S. high school boys and girls playing lacrosse has increased from about 39,000 to 108,000. With the addition of the National Lacrosse League’s NY Titans to the Big Apple, as well as various programs within the community, lacrosse continues to grow in popularity and attract our City’s youth to become involved in the sport.
Through quality organized lacrosse programs, CityLax seeks to increase/enhance educational opportunities, fitness levels, and life skills for boys and girls at the youth, middle school, and high school ages living in the Five Boroughs of New York City. The organization recently introduced high school lacrosse programs in Harlem and the Bronx and has created a strategic plan calls for further city-wide lacrosse growth and an academic enrichment initiative.
