Hunter College High School (Manhattan) took top honor in the junior high and high school division. PS 124 (Manhattan) won the elementary division and PS 70 (Bronx) placed 1st in the primary division.
Runners-up included Bronx Writing Academy in the junior high and high school division, PS 70 (Bronx) in the elementary division and PS 124 (Manhattan) in the primary division.
This tournament was created through a partnership between Chess-In-The-Schools, the Department of Education, and the New York City Sports Commission. Several highly-decorated schools competed in this year’s tournament. Brooklyn’s IS 318k claimed the 1st place trophy at the 2007 National Junior High School Championships in Sacramento, California. Brooklyn’s PS 307k recently secured the 2nd place trophy at the 2007 National Elementary Championships in Nashville, Tennessee. The Panda Pawns from PS 124 in Manhattan outlasted a talented field to capture the 5th Grade National Championships held in Orlando, Florida. Hunter College High School (Manhattan) was the 2007 Junior High K-9 National Champion and team captain Alec Getz won the Individual K-9 Championship and had a perfect score at this event.
