The 6th Annual Mayor's Cup Youth Chess Championships took place at Frederick Douglas Academy in Harlem. 380 students from grades K-12 attended the Mayor’s Cup, making it one of the largest weekend tournaments during the 2007-2008 scholastic chess season.
In the K-12 Open, I.S. 318K defeated the Bronx Writing Academy to capture the prestigious Mayor’s Cup trophy. P.S. 70X, last year’s K-3 Open champion, moved up an age division and won K-5 this year in impressive fashion. P.S. 308K came out victorious in the K-5 Novice division while P.S. 166M triumphed in the K-3 Open division.
The tournament consisted of four rounds of matches held throughout the day. Matches began at 10:00am and concluded with an awards ceremony to celebrate all of the students who participated.
This Mayor’s Cup Youth Chess Championship was created through a partnership between Chess-in-the-Schools, the Department of Education, and the New York City Sports Commission.
Chess-in-the-Schools is a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to simulating and enhancing learning skills by teaching a core, in-school chess program to kindergarten through eighth grade children in New York City’s public schools. The program is supplemented with after-school and public library programs, tournament competitions, and an alumni program for high school students. Chess-In-The-Schools currently serves over 38,000 students in the New York City school system.
