2007 Mayor's Cup New York City High School Wrestling Championships
What: Mayor's Cup New York City High School Wrestling Championships
Date: February 2 & 3, 2008
Location: 369th Harlem Armory Center - One West 142nd Street (at 5th Ave.)

Schools from the Public School Athletic League (PSAL), Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and independent schools sent their finest wrestlers from every weight class (ranging from 96 lbs. to 285 lbs.) to compete in the Mayor’s Cup New York City Wrestling Championships. The event was open to varsity and novice wrestlers from all schools in New York City. Monsignor Farrell of the CHSAA won the team competition, accumulating 261.5 points and five gold medals.

Monsignor Farrell sophomore Ben Villaret followed his gold medal in 2007 with another one in 2008, this time in a hard-fought win over St. Joes’ Jesse Cusimano (125 lbs.). Other Mayor’s Cup winners for Monsignor Farrell included varsity wrestlers Tony Carlo (135 lbs.) and John Newman (189 lbs.), as well as freshman novices’ Vin Fishetti (96 lbs.) and Gunnar Rufo (119 lbs.). The PSAL finished the wins in seven of the 15 varsity weight classes.

Over 750 wrestlers from 60 Public School Athletic League (PSAL), Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and independent schools competed in this two-day, citywide championship. Boys and girls varsity and novice wrestlers were divided into 15 weight classes ranging from 96 lbs to 285 lbs as they fought for the Mayor's Cup title.

The efforts of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association and the Beat the Streets program have increased interest in wrestling throughout the city. This year, 20 additional schools participated, making the Mayor's Cup one of the largest wrestling tournaments ever held in New York City. The top wrestlers were seeded according to overall winning percentage and whether he/she was a previous champion or placed in a previous championship. The overall team winner received the Mayor's Cup trophy along with bragging rights as the best high school wrestling team in New York City.

The Mayor's Cup is a collaborative effort of the NYC Sports Commission, the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, the 369th Regiment Armory, Beat the Streets, Inc., Martin Luther High School, the PSAL, CHSAA and independent schools.
