Over 5,000 high school track & field athletes from more than 200 New York City public, parochial, and independent schools competed at the Mayor’s Cup Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Icahn Stadium. The Monsignor Farrell HS boys’ team and the Boys & Girls HS girls’ team again took home the coveted Mayor's Cup Championship. The Farrell boys’ team claimed their fifth consecutive title (2004-2008), while the Boys and Girls HS team claimed their third consecutive girls’ championship (2006-2008).
The 2008 Mayor’s Cup saw 10 individual meet records and one team meet record broken. Kara McMahon of Marymount HS shattered the 3,000-meter run record by 28.64 seconds, posting a time of 10:38.11. Other individual meet records included Brittney Dombrowski of Archbishop Molloy HS (Javelin, 121’1”), Julia McMahon of Poly Prep School (2,000-meter steeplechase, 7:17.38), Dana Walsh of Convent of the Sacred Heart (1500-meter run, 4:48.70), Phyllis Francis of Catherine McAuley HS (800-meter run, 2:13.25), Nadonnis Rodriquez of Boys & Girls HS (200-meter run, 24.59), Janice Jackson of Medger Evers HS (100-meter hurdles, 14.51), Troy Faulkner of Curtis HS (200-meter, 21.80), Jarenn Stewart of Archbishop Molloy HS (long jump, 22’10.25”), and Nickolei Mahlung of Bishop Loughlin HS (100-meter, 10.8). The Sheepshead Bay HS Boys’ team broke the 4X100 record, running a time of 42.23.
This two-day meet featured boys' and girls' divisions competing in hurdles, steeplechase, long jump, pole vault, high jump, discus, javelin and shot put as well as numerous runs, relays, and dashes. Medals and t-shirts were awarded to the top six individual finishers in each event, while the Mayor's Cup was presented to the overall boys' and girls' team champions.
Icahn Stadium is a $42 million facility that was built through a public/private partnership between the Randall's Island Sports Foundation (RISF) and the City of New York. The facility features a 400-meter Mondo track, spectator seating for 5,000, locker rooms, fitness and meeting rooms for RISF's youth programs, and a soccer field just north of the stadium. The stadium meets International Amateur Athletic Federation requirements and will host local, national and international track and field events.
