October 6-8, 2006 |
| Place: |
Manhattan College: Draddy Gymnasium (4513 Manhattan College Pkwy), Bronx |
Fifteen of the nation’s premier wheelchair basketball teams competed in the 2006 Mayor’s Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. Following a double elimination format, the ABC Dallas Mavericks (TX), led by MVP Jay Nelms’ 32 points, defeated the Charlottesville Cardinals (VA) by a score of 75-60 to capture the Division II tournament championship. In Division III, tournament MVP Mike Haynes led the Austin Rec’ers (TX) to victory over the Adventist Knights of Maryland (48-42), securing the championship in their first tournament appearance. Additionally, All-Tournament teams were named for each division at the conclusion of the event. The Division II All-Tournament team included Class I player Kevin Grant of the New York Rollin’ Knicks, Class II player Ryan Hundemer of the Mavericks, Class III player Tom Vandever of the Cardinals while Joey Levitt was presented with the Sportsmanship award. Rounding out the roster of the Division III All-Tournament team was Class I player Alfonzo Pinkney of the Knights,
Class II player David Wear of the Rec’ers, Class III player Julius Ellerbe of the Knights and Sportsmanship honoree Penny Dodson of the Cardinals.
A welcome dinner at Manhattan College’s Draddy Gymnasium opened the event, honoring school Athletic Director Bob Byrnes with the Mayor’s Cup Community Service Award. New York City Sports Commissioner Ken Podziba presented Byrnes with the award for his help and support in the growth and development wheelchair sports in New York City throughout his 19-year tenure at Manhattan College. Additionally, Byrnes graciously donated the school’s athletic facilities for the tournament for the third consecutive year, enabling the Mayor’s Cup to have access to one of the top venues in the metropolitan area.
The New York City Sports Commission created the Mayor's Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in an effort to enhance the scope of adaptive sports in the City of New York. This NWBA-sanctioned tournament has been held annually since it’s inception in 2001 and has quickly become one of the premier wheelchair basketball tournaments in the nation. The City also sponsors Mayor’s Cup tournaments in a variety of other sports including: field hockey, billiards, handball, softball, track & field, cross country, chess and wrestling.
