Manhattan Island Foundation
2008 Schedule of Events

The Manhattan Island Foundation, founded in 1993, organizes swimming events in the waters around Manhattan. Since its inception, the Foundation has attracted nearly 10,000 participants in more than 70 swimming races, thus helping to revive a local aquatic tradition that had been abandoned for nearly a century.

The season's premier contest is the annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, which draws an international roster of swimmers. This year, the Foundation is also hosting eight other races of various distances (including two new events), an open-water swim clinic, and two multi-sport races.

The Manhattan Island Foundation has two goals. The first is to support and expand public Learn-to-Swim programs throughout New York City, particularly those that serve at-risk youth. Because of the Foundation, more than 40,000 city children have learned to swim in the last 12 years. The second goal is to raise public awareness of the waters that surround New York by supporting efforts to clean and protect them.
