10th annual Liberty World Outrigger Competition

The Liberty World Outrigger Competition, one of the premier outrigger canoe races in the world, returned to New York Harbor for a day-long competition featuring hundreds of paddlers from all over the world. Taking first place in the women’s race was team Hanohano Open from San Diego, California with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 39 seconds. In the men’s race, Team California from San Diego, California took top honors with a time of 1 hour 51 minutes and 13 seconds. Team Autumn Rose 1 from Bellingham, Washington won the mixed race with a time of 1 hour 31 minutes and 53 seconds.
The Liberty World Outrigger is a 15-mile race along the East River that allows teams to paddle their way around New York City in a friendly but competitive race. This year’s event featured men’s, women’s and mixed teams from Sweden, Tahiti, Germany, Canada and throughout the United States. New York Outrigger is Manhattan’s first outrigger canoe club. They are a volunteer-driven, non-profit educational organization committed to providing the safe environment, instruction, equipment, and camaraderie necessary to enjoy the sport of outrigger canoeing.
