Liberty World Outrigger Competition

When: Saturday, June 28, 2008
Launch: New York Harbor

The Liberty World Outrigger Competition, one of the premier outrigger canoe races in the world, returned to New York Harbor. Taking first place in the women's race was team Namolokama Women from Hanalei, Kauai (HI) with a time of 2:06:35. Namolokama Mixed, also from Kauai, won the mixed race with a time of 1:31:53. In the men's race, Manu’iwa SR Masters from Milford (CT) took top honors with a time of 1:47:59.

The Liberty World Outrigger is a 15-mile race along the East River that allows teams to paddle their way around New York City in a friendly but competitive race. This year’s event featured men’s, women’s and mixed teams from Tahiti, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Hawaii, Costa Rica, England and throughout the United States.

Approximately 300 of the best outrigger canoe paddlers from around the world competed in the 15-mile course that began and ended under the scenic Manhattan Bridge. The boats and their crews of six proceeded down the East River, around Battery Park and up the west side of Manhattan near the 38th Street Ferry Terminal. They then headed across to New Jersey and down the Hudson River to New York Harbor where they passed by the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island before proceeding to the finish line just past the Brooklyn Bridge.

Additional festivities were held in the city and state parks on the Brooklyn side of the bridge. In addition, an evening luau open to the public, was held at BLVD.

An outrigger canoe is defined by having the inclusion of a rig known as an outrigger which acts as a counterpoise or balance, rigged out from the side of the canoe. Contemporary outrigger canoe paddling has its origins in the Hawaiian Islands. For the ancient Hawaiians, the outrigger canoe was a natural extension of their everyday life and recreation.

New York Outrigger (NYO) has helped educate thousands of New Yorkers to be safe and confident paddlers while reaching millions of others through high-profile media coverage. NYO, based in Chelsea since 1996, continues its community mission of providing affordable recreational and cultural opportunities through the sport of outrigger canoeing. NYO is a non-profit educational organization that functions with the help of volunteers. We provide a variety of different opportunities for the people of New York City to get out in the water.
