New York to Face Fever in WNBA Eastern Conference Playoffs

For the first time in their seven postseason appearances, the Liberty will not be advancing past the first round of playoffs. The Indiana Fever defeated the Liberty in two close WNBA Eastern Conference Playoff games and will now go on to face the winner of the Connecticut-Detroit series in the Eastern Conference Finals.

GAME 1: Liberty vs. Indiana Fever
Indiana’s Tamika Catchings led the way for the second-seeded Fever with 19 points and 12 rebounds as they defeated the third-seeded Liberty by a score of 63-51 in Game 1 of the WNBA's Eastern Conference Playoffs. The Liberty led by nine-points at the half, but the Fever responded with a run in the second half. With the score tied 49-49 and 3:22 to go, the Fever finished the game on a closing 14-2 run. Vickie Johnson scored 17 points and was the only Liberty player in double figures. The Fever out-rebounded the Liberty 27-20. The Liberty must win Game 2 (September 1st) in Indiana to avoid elimination.

GAME 2: Liberty vs. Indiana Fever
The Indiana Fever eliminated the Liberty from the WNBA playoffs by winning Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals by a score of 58-50 on September 1st. Tamika Catchings, the 2005 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as she led the Fever to their first ever postseason win. The Liberty scored just five baskets and had 11 turnovers in the first half and were trailing 27-16 at half. The Liberty opened up the second half with a 21-8 run, and were leading 37-35 with 7:47 to go. But the Fever regained control of the game and had at least a two possession lead for the final 6 minutes of the game. Becky Hammon and La’Keshia Frett led the Liberty with 14 and 13 points, respectively. This was the Liberty’s seventh postseason appearance and it is the first time that they have not advanced past the opening round. The Fever will play the winner of the Connecticut-Detroit series in the Eastern Conference Finals.
