The New York Liberty made history by becoming the first WNBA team to play an outdoor regular season game when they hosted the Indiana Fever in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The game was also the first non-tennis sporting event to ever take place at the venue. The Liberty were unable to comeback from a third quarter deficit as they fell to the Fever by a score of 71-55.
The game drew an impressive crowd of 19,393. Fans enjoyed a free pre-game festival as well as a post-game concert by Latin pop group Menudo.
A portion of the proceeds from the game’s ticket sales and various fundraising activities throughout the evening benefited the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The BCRF is an independent not-for-profit organization whose mission is to achieve prevention and find a cure for breast cancer, served as the beneficiary of the Liberty Outdoor Classic. Altogether, the Liberty raised $20,700 for the BCRF.
