The City and State of New York joined forces to create an event to REMEMBER AND HONOR the tragedies of September 11th. On Saturday, September 14, 2002, the New York City Sports Commission in conjunction with the Achilles Track Club and Hudson River Park Trust, hosted a four-mile fun run in lower Manhattan. Let Freedom Run was presented by Modell’s Sporting Goods, and was also sponsored by Nike, Silverstein Properties, Equinox Fitness Clubs, Cushman & Wakefield, American Building Maintenance, and Runner's World Magazine. The race began at the Hudson River Park’s Pier 84 and will finished in Battery Park. Runners ran along the West Side Highway, past the World Trade Center site and finished in Battery Park, where they had a tremendous view of the Statue of Liberty.
A commemorative event, the race was intended to show the world that New York City is stronger than ever. Concluding the run, there was a celebration of life in Battery Park that included food, drink and music for all to enjoy.
Proceeds from the event benefited the Gift of New York. The Gift of New York is a non-profit initiative that provides the families of those who died in the September 11th terrorist attacks with access, at no cost, for the 18-month period from the 2001 holiday season through the Spring of 2003, to the full range of Greater New York's entertainment, cultural and sports events, performances and exhibitions. For more information on thge Gift of New York, please visit www.thegiftofnewyork.org.
