New York Jets 2008 Season Preview

The 2008 New York Jets will look to rebound from last season’s disappointing 4-12 campaign, a season that was riddled with injuries. Midway through last season, with the Jets already 1-7 and essentially out of playoff contention, long-time starting quarterback Chad Pennington was replaced by Kellen Clemens. The Jets appear to have a new answer at quarterback, as nine-time Pro Bowler Brett Favre will attempt to lead the team back to the AFC playoffs in his first season in New York.

Favre will also benefit from a revamped Jets offense that should provide him the help he needs to spearhead a postseason run. The Jets made some key moves in the offseason, acquiring former Steelers guard and seven-time Pro Bowler Alan Faneca and former Detroit Lions right tackle Damien Woody. If the offensive line can gel early in the season, expect running back Thomas Jones to break for big gains as he helps to take the pressure off the quarterback and create a more multidimensional offense.

The Jets also acquired longtime Green Bay Packers tight end Bubba Franks. Franks will solidify the tight end position for the team and is likely to be a mentor and leader for the entire offense. He will split snaps at the tight end position with rookie Dustin Keller, whom the Jets drafted with their second first round pick (#30) in the 2008 NFL Draft.

The Jets have also taken steps to bolster their defense. After trading linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the New Orleans Saints and defensive tackle DeWayne Robertson to the Broncos for future draft picks, the Jets added much-needed pass-rushing by signing free-agent defensive end Calvin Pace to a six-year deal. The team then drafted Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston with the sixth overall pick in the NFL draft, securing what promises to be a solid defensive front line.
