Jets Lose to Steelers in OT

Pittsburgh kicker Jeff Reed kicked a 33-yard field goal with 3:56 left in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 20-17 win over the New York Jets in the AFC divisional playoff game on January 15th. New York's Doug Brien missed two field goals in the final two minutes of regulation that could have sealed the game for the Jets. His first attempt from 47 yards hit the crossbar and his second, which followed an interception by David Barrett, missed wide to the left as regulation time expired.

The Jets turned two long touchdown returns--Santana Moss’ 75-yard punt return and Reggie Tongue’s 86-yard interception--into 17 consecutive points and a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter that stunned the fans in Heinz Field. Pittsburgh rookie quarterback Ben Roethlisberger then directed two pivotal scoring drives (as he had done in Pittsburgh’s previous meeting with the Jets) with the first resulting in a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward. Roethlisberger finished 17-of-30 for 181 yards with two interceptions and two touchdowns. Jets quarterback Chad Pennington went 21-of-33 for 182 yards and an interception against the NFL's top-ranked defense. The Jets became the first NFL team to play three consecutive overtime games, including their regular season loss in St. Louis. They dropped to 0-7 in Pittsburgh and 2-16 all-time against the Steelers. Pittsburgh, now with 15-straight wins, will host the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game on January 23rd.

Jets Defeat Chargers in OT, Advance to AFC Divisional Playoffs

Doug Brien kicked a 28-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Jets a thrilling 20-17 victory over the Chargers in the AFC wild-card playoff game on January 8th. Chad Pennington, bothered by a sore throwing shoulder for five games, threw two touchdown passes for the Jets who led 17-7 late in the third quarter. The Chargers fought back and forced the game into overtime when All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees to tie the game at 17 with 11 seconds left in regulation. Gate’s touchdown came one play after Eric Barton was whistled for a personal foul after he hit Brees on the helmet with his right forearm after the quarterback threw a desperation pass that was batted down in the end zone on fourth-and-goal. The Jets’ winning drive started on the New York 30 yard line after Chargers rookie kicker Nate Keading was wide right on a 40-yard field goal try with 4:19 left in overtime.

Pennington, who has led the Jets to three straight wins in San Diego dating to 2002, was 23-of-33 for 279 yards. Brees was 31-of-42 for 319 yards and two touchdowns.
