Jets come up short against New England in AFC Wild Card Game

The New York Jets came up short against the AFC East champion New England Patriots by a score of 37-16 in the AFC Wild Card game. The bitter division rivals played a hard fought game that was closer than the final score indicated. The loss ended a surprising run by the Jets who won their last three regular-season games to advance to the playoffs after what was supposed to be a rebuilding season under rookie head coach Eric Mangini.

The Jets made things interesting early, taking a 10-7 lead in the second quarter on a 77-yard touchdown catch and run by Jerricho Cotchery—the longest offensive play in Jets postseason history. Unfortunately, the Patriots then took control of the game. The turning point came late in the third quarter when Patriots lineman Rosevelt Colvin batted down a pass behind the line of scrimmage. Almost everyone thought the play was dead, however, Patriots tackle Vince Wilfork sensing that the pass was a lateral, picked up the loose ball and returned it 31 yards to the Jets 15 yard line. The play was ruled a backward pass and a fumble, and the ruling was upheld after a challenge by Mangini. The Patriots finished the drive with a field goal, extending their lead to 23-13. After a Patriots touchdown drive, the Jets took the field looking to keep their playoff hopes alive. Pennington, on second and long, looked for wide receiver Justin McCareins on the right side of the field, but Patriots defensive back Asante Samuel intercepted the pass and returned it 36 yards for the touchdown.

Chad Pennington led the Jets with a solid performance, completing 23 of 40 passes (58%) for 300 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Leon Washington contributed 50 yards rushing on 11 carries and Jerricho Cotchery added 100 yards receiving on four catches and one touchdown.
