The top wheelchair tennis players from around the world returned to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the Jana Hunsaker Memorial Wheelchair Tennis Tournament. France’s Francois Xavier Morille, ranked #41 in the world, outplayed some of the top seeds in the tournament to capture the Men’s Open Singles title. Morille defeated last year’s champion Stephane Goudou in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Paul Moran of the USA in the semis before clinching the trophy with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Joel Dembe of Senegal in the final. Other singles winners included Kevin Green (Men’s A Singles), Scott Bonk (Men’s B Singles), Sunil Patel (Men’s C Singles) and Stephen Santiago (Men’s D Singles).

In the doubles competition, Morille teamed with Sebastien Husser to take the Men’s Open Doubles title. Other doubles winners included William Eno/Kevin Green (Men’s A Doubles), Ralffy Diaz/Orlando Fabery (Men’s B Doubles), Sunil Patel/Brian Wilkinson (Men’s C Doubles) and Scott Bonk/William Eno (Masters Open Doubles). In the lone women’s event, Sheila Costanzi captured the Wheelchair A Singles title, defeating Jocelyn Detloff in the finals by a score of 6-3, 6-0.

This year’s tournament also featured two wheelchair tennis clinics open to all individuals with a disability that prevents them from playing able-body tennis. Tennis racquets and special wheelchairs designed for wheelchair tennis were provided.

Jana Hunsaker, who passed away in 2000, was a tennis instructor at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. She was an advocate for wheelchair tennis and instrumental in starting a wheelchair tennis program at the National Tennis Center. The tournament was hosted by the United Spinal Association, an organization that expands opportunities for veterans and all paralyzed Americans.
