More than 1,600 disabled and able-bodied athletes participated in the 5th Annual Hope and Possibility 5K Run/Walk. The race was divided into seven divisions that consisted of open, push-rim wheelchair, hand-crank, ambulatory disabled, visually impaired, above knee ambulatory and below knee ambulatory. More than $6,000 in prize money was awarded to the top male and female finishers for each category.
The post-race awards ceremony at the Disability Awareness Pavilion concluded the day with disability awareness activities that allowed able-bodied persons to experience a few minutes of jogging as a blind runner and/or test out a wheelchair or hand cycle.
In addition, the Kids’ Fun Run was held for children ages 2-16. The focus this year was for kids to run for fun in an effort to battle the problem of childhood obesity. The first 1,500 children who registered and participated in the race received a free pair of running shoes courtesy of the Achilles Athletic Club.
The Achilles Track Club is an organization dedicated to helping disabled people partake in athletic activity, particularly running and walking, by providing support and training programs. Achilles extends its aid to people with varying disabilities, such as visual impairment, paraplegia, amputation and others. Achilles was founded in 1983 in New York City and has expanded rapidly throughout the United States and other countries, including Norway, New Zealand, Russia and Japan.
