The 73rd Heisman Memorial Trophy was awarded to University of Florida sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow, while 2006 Heisman runner-up Arkansas running back Darren McFadden once again finished in second place. One of the most recognized trophies in all of sports, the Heisman represents excellence and achievement both on and off the football field.
Tebow, the first sophomore to win the Heisman, received 1,957 points and 426 first-place votes. He became the first player in a major college program to rush for 20 touchdowns and pass for 20 touchdowns in a single season. In leading Florida to a 9-3 record, Tebow posted 3,132 passing yards and 29 touchdowns and 838 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns. His 51 total touchdowns were more than 87 Division I-A teams recorded all season. Running back Darren McFadden rushed for 1,725 yards with 15 touchdowns and became the first player in nearly six decades to finish second in consecutive seasons. Hawaii’s Colt Brennan and Missouri’s Chase Daniel rounded out the Heisman voting.
In addition to the 2007 Heisman Trophy presentation, three past winners were honored. John David Crow (Texas A&M) celebrated the 50th anniversary of winning the award in 1957, Herschel Walker (University of Georgia) was recognized for his 25th Anniversary and Charles Woodson (University of Michigan) for his 10th Anniversary.
First awarded in 1935 to Jay Berwanger of Chicago University, 71 others have been honored as the nation’s best. Notables have included Roger Staubach (Navy, 1963), Archie Griffin (Ohio State, 1974 & 1975), Marcus Allen (USC, 1981), Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State, 1988) and Carson Palmer (USC, 2002). Ohio State Quarterback Troy Smith won the award last year.
