What: 80th Annual Daily News Golden Gloves
Date: Finals: April 19-20, 2007
Place: The Theater at Madison Square Garden

The 2007 Golden Gloves Tournament marked the 80th year of action-packed fights that culminated in two exciting nights of championship boxing at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. In what began as an event created to develop fighters who could compete in the national amateur championships, the Golden Gloves has become synonymous with excellence in amateur boxing. Preliminary bouts were held throughout the year in New York City as well as in Westchester and Long Island.

Many of boxing’s all-time greats claim the Golden Gloves as their first major victories. “Sugar” Ray Robinson, considered by many to be the greatest “pound-for-pound” fighter of all-time, won a Golden Gloves championship in 1940. Muhammad Ali made his New York City debut as Cassius Clay in the New York-Chicago Golden Gloves championships in 1959. Rocky Marciano suffered the only loss of his career in the Golden Gloves.

Women began competing in the Golden Gloves in 1995. Several of the women who first boxed in the Golden Gloves have gone on to win many local, national, and world amateur titles. Many women, including three-time Golden Gloves champions Melissa Salome and Alicia Ashley, have gone on to win professional championships.

Highlights of this year’s championships included Sal Potente (Mt. Vernon BC) scoring an upset over the nation's No.1-ranked super-heavyweight Adam Willet (Veteran's Memorial Gym) by a 4-1 margin and Bronx teenager Ronney Vargas (Webster PAL) defeating Ashante Hendrickson in the 152-pound open division. In the women’s division, Sonya Lamonikis (Gleason's Gym) pounded out a 5-0 decision over Shanell Mathes (Trinity Boxing) to earn her second consecutive title at 189 pounds and Alexis Asher (Gleason's Gym) won the judges' favor, 4-1, in her 114-pound championship match up against Amanda Walsh.

Currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, Luis Del Valle (Newburgh BC) was impressive as he destroyed a spirited but overmatched Alfredo Baeza (Webster PAL) with a full arsenal of punches in their 125-pound open fight. Del Valle's nearly flawless performance earned him the 5-0 decision and his third Golden Gloves title.

Angelique Bovee, a personal trainer in White Plains, defeated Dariana Casado of Queens by decision for the 145-pound women's title and her third Golden Gloves championship in four years. Luis Ramirez, a junior at Lincoln High School, was beaten in the 119-pound novice final by Schavez Peters. In the 112-pound novice division, Sleepy Hollow High School junior Eddie Barrizonte lost a decision to Jamie Stuart, another high school junior.

Proceeds from Golden Gloves events will be donated to help fund youth programs in host site neighborhoods. We encourage you to catch a glimpse of the next generation of boxing legends as another chapter is added to the storied history of the Golden Gloves!
