GIANT NEWS
Giants WIN Super Bowl XLII!!

The New York Giants pulled off a shocking 17-14 upset of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII to bring home their first Super Bowl victory since 1990 and became the first NFC wildcard team to win a Super Bowl. Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning cemented his name in Giants history when he tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds remaining to give the Giants a 17-14 lead. Manning, who completed 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns, showed great poise in leading his team down the field with less than three minutes to go. The winning drive was kept alive by an incredible escape by Manning followed by a spectacular and improbable catch by wide receiver David Tyree on third down. The Giants relied on an outstanding performance by their defense, who limited the Patriots to only 14 points, their lowest output of the season. Led by veteran Michael Strahan and outstanding defensive end Justin Tuck, the Giants defense sacked New England quarterback Tom Brady five times.

The Patriots, who were 18-0 and looking to complete the NFL’s second perfect season, fell short of perfection when Tom Brady’s final Hail Mary pass fell incomplete. Brady, the NFL 2007 MVP and winner of three previous super bowls, was 29 for 48 with 266 passing yards and one touchdown. It appeared that the Patriots may complete the undefeated season when Brady connected with wide receiver Randy Moss for a 6-yard touchdown pass that put the Patriots ahead 14-10 with 2:42 remaining in the game. The Giants responded with a dramatic drive down the field that put the Giants up 17-14. Brady had one last chance to lead the Patriots to victory after starting with the ball on New England’s 26 yard line with 26 seconds, but he was unable to complete a pass as the Giant’s pass rush continued to harass him as Brady’s last-ditch desperation pass on 4th down fluttered harmlessly to the ground with one second to go.

2007 Giants Season Recap

The 2007 was a year for the ages as the Giants became the first NFC wild card team in history to win the Super Bowl. The season started off slowly, as the Giants dropped the first two games to Dallas and Green Bay. The Giants quickly shook off the bad start, and reeled off six consecutive victories to improve their record to 6-2 through the first half of the season. A loss in week 17 against the New England Patriots proved to be a stepping stone for the Giants, as it seemed to galvanize the team going into the playoffs. The Giants finished the season with a 10-6 record earning the fifth seed in the NFC playoffs.

The Giants, capitalizing off the momentum gained from the game against the Patriots propelled the team through the playoffs. Eli Manning effectively squashed all questions anyone had about his ability to play under pressure by throwing four touchdowns and no interceptions through the first three games of the playoffs, earning three straight road victories against Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay. In Super Bowl XLII, the Giants defeated the New England Patriots 17-14 to ruin the Patriots perfect season. The Giants finished the season 14-6 and won a NFL-record 11 consecutive road victories to close out the season.

Giant fans will mark this season as the year that Eli Manning matured into one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks and was named as the Super Bowl MVP. Manning had 10 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions over the team’s final five games including the playoffs and the regular season finale against the Patriots. On offense, the Giants relied on a strong running game and a career year by Plaxico Burress to succeed all season long. Burress led the receivers with 70 catches and 12 touchdowns while Brandon Jacobs rushed for over 1,000 yards his first season as a starter. The biggest contributor to the Giants success was their defense which led the NFL in sacks with 53. Their pass rush was led by Osi Umenyiora, Michael Strahan, and Justin Tuck. Umenyiora was the only Giant to make the Pro Bowl this year, a season in which he was fifth in the NFL with 13 sacks. With most of the team returning intact for next season, the Giants will be a force to reckon with as they attempt to win back-to-back NFL championships for the first time in the franchise’s storied history.
