GIANT NEWS |
2008 Giants Season Preview
The New York Giants exceeded nearly everyone’s expectations last season pulling out 11 consecutive road victories en route to winning Super Bowl XLII--the franchise’s third championship of the Super Bowl era. As they look to repeat their championship performance in 2008, the Giants will face tough opposition in the NFC East, arguably one of the toughest divisions in football. The Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles all finished .500 or better last season and should prove to be strong competitors again this season.
Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning will look to build upon his stellar performance in the 2007 playoffs, in which he threw 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions while garnering the Super Bowl XLII Most Valuable Player award. He will have plenty of help on the offensive end, with the emergence of running backs Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress is coming off a career year, in which he caught 12 touchdown passes, good for fourth in the NFL.
The Giants will also see some new faces on the offensive side of the ball. Second-year tight end Kevin Boss will take over the starting role, after the team traded 4-time Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for two 2009 draft picks. The Giants selected University of Michigan receiver Mario Manningham in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, adding depth to an already solid class of receivers. The Giants also picked up free agent quarterback David Carr, the former number one overall pick who will play a reserve role as a backup to Manning.
This offseason saw the retirement of Giants’ defensive end Michael Strahan, one of the top pass rushers in the history of the NFL. The Giants, however, figure to have little trouble replacing him, as the team boasts defensive ends Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, each of whom had 10 or more sacks last season. The Giants have newfound holes to fill at linebacker after the departures of Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor, but the team expects new acquisition Danny Clark to help the transition. First-round draft pick Kenny Phillips is expected to compete for the starting position at free safety, after Gibril Wilson left the team via free agency.
