Professional women's tennis returned to the West Side Tennis Club for the Forest Hills Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Classic presented by Commerce Bank. As one of the final tune-up tournaments before the US Open, this hard court event featured 16 of the world's top women players as they competed for $74,800 in total prize money. The finals featured a pair of unseeded players as Shuai Peng (CHN) defeated Lucie Safarova (CZE) in straights sets (6-4, 6-2) to capture her second career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Classic title (2005).

Every match of the tournament was played on the tennis club’s famous center court, where the final of the US Open was contested between the years 1915 and 1977.
