FINA Swimming World Cup
FINA Swimming World Cup

Date: February 11-12, 2005
Place: Nassau County Aquatics Center - East Meadow, NY

The world’s best swimmers traveled to the Nassau County Aquatics Center to compete in the second-to-last meet in the eight stop FINA Swimming World Cup swim series. South Africa’s Ryk Neethling was a meet standout winning three events--the 200-meter freestyle, the 50-meter freestyle, and the 100-meter individual medley. For the third-consecutive meet, Neethling set a new world record in the 100-meter IM, shaving his time down to 51.52 seconds. Neethling leads in overall World Cup scoring for top performance with 1108 FINA points and Roland Schoeman is in second place with 1063 FINA points. Randal Bal represented the US well, sweeping the backstroke events; the 50-, 100-, and 200-meter races.

On the women’s side, Virginia’s 16-year-old Kate Ziegler won the meet and set a new US record in the 800-meter freestyle with her time of 8:16.32. The previous US record of 8:18.77 had stood since 1980. Josephine Lillhage of Sweden won the 100-meter freestyle and the 200-meter freestyle. Lillhage’s performance in this meet tightened up the women’s World Cup standings with Karin Kammerling of Sweden (1019 FINA points) leading Lillhage (1010) by just nine points.

The USA led the medal count winning a total of 30 medals (12-8-10) throughout the meet. South Africa, led by Neethling, won the second most medals with five Gold and four Silver.
