2003 Women's Foil World Cup Fencing

For four straight days, the New York World Cup drew thousands of spectators, all looking to catch a glimpse of the world's best women foil fencers as well as men’s and women’s sabre. The events took place at Grand Central Terminal and Columbia University. The New York World Cup is a crucial qualification step on the road to the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece. The competition featured more than 300 athletes from over 30 countries. It is the only 2004 Olympic qualification event being held in the United States.

The U.S. women's sabre team took home the gold medal on the evening of Sunday, June 15th, in Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall. The victory gave phenom Sada Jacobson her second gold of the World Cup. On Friday, Jacobson won the individual sabre competition as an electric crowd cheered her on. She is currently ranked #1 in the world.
In the women's foil competition, Polish sensation Sylwia Gruchala defeated defending World Cup champion Valentina Vezzali of Italy on her quest to win World Cup gold. The final score of the gold medal match was 15-11.
In men's sabre, Italian teammates, Aldo Montano and Luigi Tarantino, battled against each other in the finals while Domonkos Ferjancsik of Hungary, and Spain’s very own Fernando Medina tied for third. United States favorite Keeth Smart finished seventh.
