MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Friends:

Nothing symbolizes summer more than enjoying the outdoors, watching the big game, or working up a sweat at the beach. This summer, sports fans throughout the City will have many opportunities to enjoy events on warm summer days and nights.

From July 11-15, baseball fans will have another reason to cheer as the world's premier baseball players come to the world's greatest city to participate in Major League Baseball's All-Star Week. The activities will culminate at Yankee Stadium with the State Farm Home Run Derby on July 14 and the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 15. The week-long celebration is expected to attract more than 175,000 visitors, raising an estimated $148 million for the city's economy.

For those who prefer the beach over the ballpark, the City will once again welcome the world's top men's and women's beach volleyball players to Coney Island for the AVP Brooklyn Open on July 18-20. Over 150 of the world's best professional beach volleyball players will compete in a festive outdoor stadium built alongside Coney Island's famed boardwalk. All eight members of the US beach volleyball team are expected to play, as they prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

New Yorkers can also witness extraordinary athleticism and endurance first-hand, with the Nautica New York City Triathlon on July 20. Participants will complete a 1.5K swim in the Hudson River, a 40K bike ride along the West Side Highway and a 10K run through Central Park, in one of the largest Olympic-distance triathlons in the United States.
