The Brooklyn Cyclones - 2005

Cyclones 2005 Season Recap

The Brooklyn Cyclones missed the New York Penn League Playoffs for the first time since 2002 after taking third place in the McNamara division. The Cyclones were eliminated from wild card contention on September 6th after a disappointing loss to the last-place Aberdeen Ironbirds. Mets Hall-of-Famer and first-year Cyclones coach Mookie Wilson replaced manager Tony (T.J.) Tijerina before the 2005 season and started off the season strong before eventually falling 12 games behind the League Champion Staten Island Yankees. Though disappointed with their third place finish, the Cyclones can celebrate the young talent that has emerged in the past year. 21-year-old Joseph Holden led the Cyclone offense with a team-high .299 avg. and 22 stolen bases, while 6’2”, 230 lb Caleb Stewart had a team high 10 HR. Pitcher Salvador Aguilar finished the year with a perfect 5-0 record over 15 outings while allowing only 9 walks to his 45 strikeouts.

Cyclones Hire Mookie
Mookie Wilson, the former Mets outfielder most remembered for his grounder that went through the legs of Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner in Game 6 of the '86 World Series, will take over as manager of the Cyclones for the upcoming 2005 season. He replaces Tony (T.J.) Tijerina. Wilson played outfield for the Mets from 1980 to 1989 and is the club's leader in stolen bases and triples. He was the centerfielder on the 1986 World Championship team. Following his playing career, Wilson was the Mets' first-base coach from October 1996 through the end of the 2002 season under manager Bobby Valentine. He managed for the last two seasons at the Mets' rookie league team in Kingsport (Tenn.), compiling a 57-75 record.
